Joining the Graphic Design Group and attending our weekly meetings is a great opportunity for students to build their portfolio and add experience to their resumes. They will be able to experience working with real clients and jobs. It is also a good way of having students step up and take on some responsibilities by becoming group officers who will run the group, manage jobs, help organizing events, etc. We are encouraging all students (print, web, interactive, etc) to participate no [...]

The Twitterverse was a-twitter yesterday due to AMC issuing take down notices to a series of fan-created accounts for the characters of their hit series Mad Men. When the accounts went up a few months ago, the characters were embraced by Twitter users, who probably skew on the side of an advertising/marketing/consulting tech-savvy audience. They didn't care whether they represented AMC or not.... Read more

That ultimate symbol of brand and luxury, the automotive hood ornament, seems to be nearing the end of the road. Newsweek reports that Jaguar has quietly stopped offering its signature cat figurine as a standard feature, and Mercedes is using a raised ornament on less than one-third of its new models. It's obvious that hood ornaments have been on the decline for decades, especially since Ralph Nader ruined the fun by pointing out that these often spear-like flourishes had a [...]

While all political eyes are now on the Democrats in Denver, the Twin Cities are getting ready for the Republican conclave next week in St. Paul. And Minneapolis agency Campbell Mithun is getting into the act with a campaign developed in conjunction with Hungry Man Productions, and launched via the UnConvention Web site, that urges the locals in this traditionally Democratic state (or, more precisely, Democratic-Farmer-Labor state) to be gracious hosts. Republican delegates who check out the Web [...]

based in melbourne, australia jeremy geddes is an artist who aims to portray extremes of emotion
in his work. his paintings are highly realistic portraying unusual sights or a series of characters that
are at times frightening. one of his series places 60s-era cosmonauts in strange urban settings as
if they had simply dropped from the sky. other pieces depict marked robbers or eerie characters
which could be ripped straight from the latest slasher flick.

Terrific profile in Wired by Michael Behar on Red Digital Cinema. Founded and led by Oakley founder Jim Jannard, their Red One movie camera is, dollar-for-dollar, the best and most amazing camera in the world. It sells for $17,500 — but if you think that sounds expensive, consider that the equivalent film camera rents for $25,000 per month, not including the (very expensive) cost of film. The most amazing part is that the core technology didn’t come from a company like [...]

I’m a tripper. Invisible cracks in the sidewalk, errant candy wrappers, delicate leaves, you name it — I only recently stopped blaming the horrible conditions of the sidewalks in Sao Paulo for my clumsiness that oftentimes results in my arms flailing and legs akimbo; butt sometimes making contact with the cement. But when walking through one of the metro stations yesterday it wasn’t only me who almost lost their breath. I stepped right into a skate bowl but remained on terra [...]

More pieces in the Workshopped exhibition as part of Sydney Design 08 included this eye-catcher, the UPut Storage System by Angela Kane. Denis Abalos’ Razor Light provided a cool blue glow, while David Knott and Chris Hardy showed their lighting as well. Peter Stewart’s HP1 Stool combines net seating with a gentle rock, but Amy Tang’s Organic Culture Tables had their feet on the ground. Amy Cunningham’s coat rack and screen showed a good use of materials, and Kenan Wang’s [...]
